After a hard day on foot in the hills we arrived back for dinner. Sitting around a single gas lamp, we were treated as honoured guests and many tales were told of the way their ancestors fought the British in the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-1880). Folk memory was as sharp as if it were yesterday. Earlier, I had been shown the old fort with the pits where prisoners were kept during that war - I didn't like to ask what became of them. Outside, there was tremendous thunder and lightning... and what sounded like wolves howling - it was all very atmospheric!
