Incredible contrasts, traditional Muslim clothing next to great big western styled cars, yet no real road to drive them on, then you wonder if that is an open sewer on the left hand side? Do I see television ariels too?

@Curly: Many thanks Curly! The roads are very bad so there are lots of 4x4's ranging from ancient ex Soviet ones to the latest Landcruisers and Nissans. Almost ALL saloon cars are Toyota Corollas - the only car that survives the conditions. Yes, its an open sewer. A city of almost 4 million people but no sewage system (wrecked). Yes, TV aerials and dishes abound. Big problem with electricity, maybe a couple of hours a day and often in the middle of the night :-)

Is there sickness due to the open sewers, or have they become immune to it?

@Judy: Hi Judy, many thanks for your comment, there is no immunity, respiratory illnesses, diarrhoeal diseases, and malnutrition are very common. Its also hard to get hold of medicines. Average life expectancy is one of the lowest in the world. Children are particularly vulnerable, 25% die before the age of 5.
