@lydia: Its recycling... the Kabul refuse system works roughly like this... you create rubbish, everyone puts it out on the street in a big stinking pile, children and the old go over it and takeaway anything of any possible value tin cans, plastic bottles or other treasures - herds of goats and fat-tailed sheet are moved from heap to heap by girls (like this) or boys the animals eat anything edible and often inedible. Once a week the city refuse men come round and shovel up the remains into the back of a lorry and take it away for landfill... now thats recycling :-) really!
