@Evelyne Dubos: This is an unusual one - normally the go down two wheels sideways into an open sewer like the sewer to the right in the pic.

My oh my. Good thing it is a Toyota. I imagine with 4WD, if he was at all an experienced driver in 4W mode, he could have gotten himself out. It surprises me - much like Evelyne, that he didn't see this massive hole in the road. Also I consider the different standards... I thought our potholes after winter were bad!
