Saints have been calm while stretched upon the rack, And Guatimozin smil'd on burning coals; But never yet did housewife notable Greet with a smile a rainy washing-day. "Washing Day." Anna Lætitia Barbauld (thanks Graça B!)

@Ana Lúcia: It was cold and wet, somehow, I don't think it would dry in a hurry. There may be some logic in it as you often see washing out in the rain in Scotland too... but I've never been able to fathom the meaning of it!
Another brilliant capture that transports you...I'm grateful that I don't have to pay, thanks very much :) maybe it's that fresh rain smell :)

IN answer to Lorraine: you put the washing out when it is dry and then it rains so you leave it out. The composition is excellent, and the picture has much to capture the eyes

Great composition. First we look at cityscape, then we look at the woman , she liven up the picture and we can imagine her life.

I agree with Evelyne Dubos. Your recent photos sent me on tour of the low income areas of my rural township. My husband is on the governing board of the township, so he drove me around. Although some were run down, none looked as barren and harsh as this woman's house.

@Anita: Water has to be carried up the hill before the washing can commence, no electricity, and no sewage system at all. I'm pleased the image inspired a trip for you!
Nice view!

The image is a reminder to never complain and always be grateful for what you have. You capture what most of us will never see. To haul water up to do wash then hang the few items over the mud out your front door, this is a person who does not know waste or greed. Amazing how the house is part of the mountain. You are a powerful photographer.
