225 million years ago India was a big island drifting northwards in a large ocean. 40-50 million years ago it rammed into Asia. This is where they crashed! The flat plain is part of the Indian plate, the huge mountains behind, the Hindu Kush are part of the Asian plate. The plates collided to form a magnificent view for the wandering photographer! The scale is enormous!

@Ina: Hi Ina, the flat plain below is itself at a height of 6000 ft (2000 m.)! Before India started drifting north it was attached to your part of the world, southern Africa! Many thanks for the comment! Bob

@eddy: Hi Eddy, on the way to Kabul I fly to Dubai first, usually right down the Shiraz Mountains - you have some terrific mountains in Iran too, one day I will stop off there!!
this is a fantastic photo and your explanation or how the beautiful mountains formed is great. people need to understand the fantastic processes of earth's formation. i applaud you for your photo and your description of their formation.
